Yeah so I made the big push last night and from 9:30 pm Monday to 8:30 am Tuesday pumped out : one 100 page book of my "research" on typefaces. research consisted of several days of xeroxing any and all cool type from the art and design library. Also produced was one 16 page book of "How I feel about typography" or some stupid bullshit. Typography, for those of you playing at home, is the craft of typesetting. You would not believe all the damn rules I have to keep track of in my head about this crap.
So This more-or-less catches me up to where I ought to be in my academic ways. The cost of being addicted to Star Wars Galaxies has been a high one.
I have an Art History exam this thursday, then produce a more polished version of the rushed books by saturday-ish, and then I may resume to a more moderate pace in school work.
For now, however, I struggle to stay awake untill my shift ends at 6pm.
I have to tell you, these "Pee-Ceez" the rest of the world seems to use can be pretty cool. Apparently they can be used for far more than playing Star Wars Galaxies.
With a minimum of effort I've gotten nearly all the programs downloaded. I can see why the RIAA is pissed off. ANy idiot with half a brain and a computer can download this crap. I haven't done any Peer2peer stuff for like 4 years. Its gotten a lot easier.
I can download music while I do my design homeowrk! This sh!t r0x0rs!
I am greedy. Greed drives me. If I werent greedy I would just work enough to keep food on the table, but thats not enough for me. I want a car, and clothes, and electronic toys and new rug for my bedroom. My critique on Capitalism is not intended as a bird's eye view of the matter.
Everything is relative, of course. Because I am greedy, does not automatically place in the same moral circles as Ken Lay of Enron fame. I am less greedy than he, but still greedy.
Consumerism is what I'm really talking about when I say Greed drives capitalism. If people stopped buying crap we don't actually need, the economy would crumble. After September 11th, what did all the asshat politicos say? "This is the strogest nation in the world, and we're all going to go out and do our part for the economy!" By ... shopping. Greed is really what drives out economic model. We want stuff, and we want more stuff than other people.
I still maintain that fear, greed, and hunger have they're parts to play in any economic model, in varying degrees. There are plenty of folks in capitalist economies that work just to make enough to keep their belly full. But Greed, as far as I can see, is the foremost motivator of people within capitalism.
I've been stuck at this conclusion for years. A new system cannot take over the existing one unless it is run on a different Prime Motivator.
So I've been working on a theory. A big one. I once heard the term "Theory of Everything" and that's what I'm calling my big theory. Its me attempting to figure out how things work. Big things like wars, politics, economies, economic models, culture, and people for starters. This is the first part in what will be a running series of posts dealing with where I am in the various stages of developing this theory. here goes.
I don't much care for it. I've long held the opinion that its greatest strength and weakness is that it is a system fueled by greed. Every economic model needs a Prime Motivator to get people to go work. In my time I've only seen a few distinctly effective motivators to get people to work. Hunger, Fear, and Greed. Now these elements exist in all economic models one way or another, but to differing degrees. The slave economies of Egypt and Rome ran on fear. Slaves work under fear of pain and death, so the prime motivator is fear in those systems. Their masters, however were motivated by greed, so it played a secondary role here I guess.
But the point is that all economic models need a Prime Motivator to get people to work. Communism failed because it was built on Ideals which failed to inspire people to work hard. I've studied the tenets of Anarchy, and found it to is based on overly optimistic perceptions of basic human nature. Both communism and anarchy propose people will work together simply beacuse it is in their common interest to do so. However, "the common interest" has failed time and again to produce effective economic models.
Greed is the problem i have with capitalism. I would love to see another system take it's place but the first step is to discover a new Prime Motivator that will prove effective.
In order to have somethign replace capitalism it has to be better than it. Not just spiritually better, but also mroe productive.
Why? Why can't we all just forget about advancing and go live in the woods with loinclothes on? Just working enough to get by, to live in peace and harmony? Well, I'll tell you why. Because people are dicks. You decide to go all "Amish" and not advance in technology it'll only be a matter of time before you're conquered or destroyed.
So any replacement of capitalism must be able to compete militarily with capitalism. Communism crumbled because it drove its people into the ground attempting to compete economically and militarily with capitalism. So if you're going to revert to loinclothes, you had better conquer the world before you do it.

word to my homies dying in a hostile land- i pray that they fight the good fight and return to the homeland as soon as they can. God be with the pows and the men brave enough to not fake asthma and stand up to a brutile dictator and free the people- our men and women are on the frontlines, giving life as i type. the last i checked- when you enlist in the United States military you swore an oath- be it active duty or reserve the ucmj is the overriding power- to do what you have to do. peace out.
whoa donkey man, you can't take a fucking joke can you? Yeah, when I signed up a took an oath to defend the constitution of the united states against all enemies foriegn and domestic. I believe that Bush and his fucking cronies are a greater threat to the constitution than any other force on this earth. What you think because I'm against the war I'm out spitting on ROTC kids? You think because I'm an employee of the government that it's my duty to agree with whatever the fuck they say? Your email insinuates that I'm some kind of chickenshit mother fucker, you don't say it, but its between the lines. I'm upset about all the Americans dying over there, being tortured by a desperate regime in its waning days. But my anger isn't aimed at those in dssent, or France, but at the Bush Administration for throwing us into this war. I'm upset that we're sending only a fraction of our troops into battle because Rumsfield had a hard-on for his roling start bullshit, where he thought Iraq would surrender in a few days. Now, they're sneding another 120,000 but why the fuck weren't they there to begin with? Because this war is being orchestrated and led by a bunch of fucking chickenhawks who've never seen combat. The only man who did, Colin Powell was the only one fighting for a diplomatic solution this whole time.
Do I want anything to do with this war? Fuck no. This will go down in history as the most unjustifiable war of agression since the Spanish-American War of the 1840's. You think I'll volunteer for something I'm bound to look back upon with distaste?
I'd kept my mouth shut about how I feel about the war to you, because I knew you were probobly gobbling up whatever propoganda they were serving up on your base, and didn't feel like getting into it. But man, I have some bad news for you, there's no justifiable reason to invade Iraq. The Government doesn't give a rats ass about liberateing the oppressed peoples of the world, iraq included. Just ask the Kurds in turkey, the chinesse living under brutal comunism, north korea, all those bloody military states in africa, man they don't give a shit about the people. That's just icing on shit to make the shit look like cake.
So you think what, that I think it's all about oil? Partly, but I'm not a "no blood for oil" slogan spewing dissenter. Oil is part of it, but it's so much bigger than that. Once Iraq is being run by a west-freindly government, we'll have the ultimate base of operation in the middle east to project american power from. Iraq borders dman near every country that could possibly give us trouble in the Mid East, No more woories about fly-over rights or bases in saudi and kuwait. from Iraq we could strike anything in the mid east, subduing the other contries and finally, after 25 years, stabilize the region for good. This would be good for the oil business, no doubt, but it goes beyond them to projecting american power over all the mid east.
There's also the little matter of Pre-emption to worry about. Attacking a country because one-day-in-the-future-they-may-be-dangerous is so fucking insane I can't begin to wrap my fucking head around it. I mean, its not like a pre-emptive strike on an enemy who is massing his tanks on the border and is poised to strike. This is striking because he has tanks, even if they're sitting in some bunker. Its about potential versus imminent threat. But the ral danger lies in other countries using this justification for war themselves. If India and/or Pakistan applt the theory of pre-emption, each could very justifiably invade the other since each are threats. I mean, this is so out there.
And I hate Mother Fucking Bush&Co. more than anything. Do some reading man. Look up the particulars in the PATRIOT ACT, this is fucking big brother come home to roost. Or the Patriot act 2, which allows the Justice Dept to strip citizenship fpr anyone SUSPECTED of aiding terror groups. No worries about civil rights if you take their citizenship away. No more court orders for wire taps, police pwers expanded to the point where its abuse is assured to surface. Shit is fucked up here in America man.
So there you go, the rough outlines of where I stand on all this. You want it, you got it. Pull your head out of your fucking ass, ignore the bullshit and you'll see what I'm talking about.

Hey hey hey. I know I haven't updated in a bit, I guess I just didn't feel like it. Yeah. I came to the conclusion that this site, despite its appearances, is not actually a journal. It's a damn bulletain board, and if I put up weird pictures of myself, I can't blame people for laughing.
So! Had a party last night, went to this place Laser Quest in Newington. Harriet's Birthday, good times had by all. I tried to use a dance dance revolution machine there and was thoroughly beaten in all three rounds. This was quite a suprise to me as I own the home version and am not too shaby at picking 'em up and putting 'em down.
Laser Tagging. Good fun, HOWEVER there was this little bastard whose handle was "CASHMONEY"who was pissing me off something fierce. If this little cheater weren't only 16, I think it may have come to blows. Or at least shoving and swearing. The guy ran around and would shoot you and you'd have like 10 seconds before you're sensors restarted. This kid would walk right next to you and shoot you the wholetime, piling on the kills while you were stuck waiting for your gun to work. I pushed him against the wall and grabbed his gun from him, much to his suprise I think. He didn't stop though, and I was pretty upset by the end of it.
So anyway. Going to DC this weekend to smash the police state, stay tuned to your local media monopoly for footage of John and I pooping on the whitehouse lawn.
At work, bored. Have to go to class soon, with a project that really really does suck. that's going to be tough. I hate having work i know is crap. the sad thing about it all is that I realized there was a problem 2 days ago and am too poor to go buy more paper, get my camera fixed, get more film, get mounting board. Things is depressing. Good news 364 days until I am officially out of the Military. I have guard this weekend and will probably have to go see the commander so he can set me down and try and convince me to stay in. I'm considering what i may say in reply . . .
